Educational Services are Available for Individuals with Disabilities, Birth Through 22 Years of Age

Parents or community members within the East San Gabriel Valley Special Education Local Plan Area (ESGV SELPA) boundaries who suspect a child (birth to age 22) has special needs are encouraged to contact the special education department in their local school district office.

All SELPAs within Los Angeles County, known as the Greater Los Angeles Area SELPAs (GLAAS), have a local agreement pertaining to students with or suspected of disabilities parentally placed in private schools. Parents whose children attend a private school located within Los Angeles County boundaries who suspect their child has special needs are encouraged to contact the special education department in their school district of residence. Parents who reside outside of Los Angeles County whose children attend private schools within the ESGV SELPA who suspect their child has special needs are encouraged to contact the special education department of the district where the private school is located.

The ESGV SELPA is a consortium of ten Unified School Districts and four Charter School Local Educational Agencies (LEAs) working together to provide special education services for students with identified disabilities from birth to age 22. Services are offered in the least restrictive environment in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Once referred to special education, students are assessed to determine the disability and the impact on school performance to determine eligibility for special education services. Students with any of the following disabilities may be eligible for special education services: Autism, Deafness, Hard of Hearing, Deaf-Blindness, Emotional Disturbance, Speech and Language Impairment, Multiple Disability, Intellectual Disability, Established Medical Disability, Traumatic Brain Injury, Specific Learning Disability, Orthopedic Impairment, and Visual Impairment. All assessments are followed by an Individual Educational Planning (IEP) team meeting at which parents, teachers, and staff determine eligibility, specific goals, placement, and services. Parent permission is required for all Special Education services.
